Article Icon 1Job Growth Sluggish Last Year

Arizona's economy added 24,600 jobs in 2025, marking its slowest annual growth in more than 15 years.

Hiring picked up in December, with the addition of about 6,400 jobs—one of the highest monthly gains in the nation. The statewide jobless rate of 4.3% was unchanged from November.

The health care sector led in hiring in 2025, while sectors like government, trade, and manufacturing experienced declines.

A report issued last year by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity projected about 1% annual job growth into 2026, mainly in health care and construction.

Article Icon 1Human Trafficker ID'd

The FBI identified the convicted human trafficker shot by a Border Patrol agent in Arivaca on Tuesday as Patrick Schlegel, 34, of Arizona, who walked away from a pre-release center Dec. 15.

Schlegel allegedly fled on foot after a traffic stop and fired at a Border Patrol helicopter, prompting an agent to return fire. Schlegel was transported to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said his department is coordinating the investigation.

Schlegel was serving a 36-month sentence for transporting illegal aliens for profit and gun possession. He signed out of a pre-release facility on Dec. 15 and never returned, authorities said.

The incident follows a deadly car crash last week in Nogales where a human trafficking suspect allegedly caused multiple fatalities while fleeing Border Patrol.

Article Icon 1Traffic Cameras Returning to Phoenix

Traffic cameras will return to the Phoenix streets next month after a multiyear pause.

The city will install 17 speed‑monitoring cameras at various locations, with citations starting March 25 after a 30-day warning period.

Phoenix officials say the cameras are part of a city safety program, while critics and some lawmakers argue their use is revenue-driven and are pushing for a November vote to ban them.

The cameras' return comes amid an ongoing debate in Mesa over tens of thousands of photo radar citations signed using a retired judge's name.
