Lawmakers Weigh Expanding Gun Law

A bill to expand who can request a court-ordered firearm seizure under Colorado's red flag gun law cleared its first committee hearing Tuesday in a party-line vote that followed hours of heated debate.

Passed in 2019 and updated in 2023, the Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, or red flag law, allows a court to temporarily seize a gun from a person who poses a significant risk of harm.

Currently, law enforcement, family members, educators, and health or mental health professionals can request an ERPO. Democrat-sponsored SB26-004 would add institutions like hospitals, schools, and behavioral health centers to that list.

Opponents argue the bill would further encroach on Second Amendment rights, in part by eroding trust between gun owners and medical providers, and by making it easier to submit false red flags.

Population Tops 6M

Colorado's population surpassed 6 million in the first half of 2025, even as overall growth slowed, according to new estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The bureau estimates Colorado's population reached 6,012,561 as of July 1, 2025—making it the 20th most populous state—a milestone driven largely by increased births and a decline in migration.

For the first time since 2004, the state saw negative net domestic migration, though net international migration remained positive. Colorado's 0.4% growth rate trailed the U.S. average of 0.5%.

The growth slowdown reflects a broader national trend attributed to a historic decline in net international migration.

Colorado Leads Team USA Roster

Colorado is sending 32 athletes—more than any other state—to compete for Team USA in the 2026 Winter Olympics. Here's a list of Coloradans on the 232-athlete roster.

Lindsey Vonn, 41, of Vail, is returning for her fifth Olympic appearance after coming out of retirement. She'll join Mikaela Shiffrin, the first alpine skier to record 100 FIS World Cup wins.

In addition to the many skiers, a handful of Coloradan snowboarders, two figure skaters, a bobsledder from Fort Collins, and an NHL player from Erie made the team.
