A Hancock County breeder has agreed to surrender more than 1,100 chinchillas and permanently end federally regulated animal operations after inspectors uncovered alleged animal welfare violations.

Federal officials documented dozens of violations during inspections of R & R Chinchilla in Jenera. They alleged that owner James Ritterspach reported keeping 300 to 450 animals while concealing roughly 800 more in a separate building for years.

Inspectors who entered that building Aug. 5 reported dead chinchillas, open packets of rat poison beside enclosures, and ammonia levels that forced them outside coughing.

Humane World for Animals removed the chinchillas this week. The group is providing care and arranging shelter placements.
