Good Morning! On this day in 1964, a Delta rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral carrying Syncom 3, the first satellite to hold a fixed spot above Earth. Weeks later, it beamed the Tokyo Olympics into American living rooms. Where did margarine go? Why did an entire country stop eating liver almost overnight? The food industry doesn't advertise these changes, but the answers are out there, buried in USDA consumption data, FDA rulings, and a peer-reviewed study that flipped decades of nutrition advice on its head. Today on The Flyover Podcast, Ayla counts down five foods that quietly vanished from the American table, and reveals the one swap science actually got backward. Tune in here! Later today, watch for a message from our partner Vision Secrets about four subtle warning signs that your vision may be changing, including some that are easy to dismiss as normal aging. Today's sponsor, Oricle Hearing Aids, is helping readers hear more clearly without the sky-high prices, offering a tiny, easy-to-use hearing aid with clear sound and all-day power for under $100.

November Ballot Takes Shape
Florida's November ballot took shape Tuesday as voters chose nominees in the state's primary election. U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, backed by President Trump, won the Republican nomination for governor, defeating Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and others. He'll face Democrat David Jolly, a former Republican congressman, in the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis. In the U.S. Senate special election, Republican Sen. Ashley Moody easily won her primary as she seeks to finish Marco Rubio's term. She'll face state Rep. Angie Nixon of Jacksonville, who defeated Alex Vindman for the Democratic nomination. The night's biggest upset came in Central Florida's 7th District, where two-term U.S. Rep. Cory Mills—under a House Ethics Committee investigation—lost the Republican primary to former TV news anchor Ryan Elijah. In the 6th District, U.S. Rep. Randy Fine turned back four GOP challengers. The attorney general contest skipped the primary altogether: Republican incumbent James Uthmeier and Democrat José Javier Rodríguez were unopposed and advanced directly to November's general election. |
Florida Executes Man in Wife's Killing
Florida executed William Silvia on Tuesday evening for the 2006 shotgun killing of his estranged wife. Silvia, 61, bought a 12-gauge shotgun and drove to his mother-in-law's Casselberry home, where his wife had been living since their separation. The family was in the middle of a cookout. The attempt to reconcile failed. Silvia pulled the shotgun from his truck and fired seven shots, killing Patricia Silvia and wounding her mother, Betty Woodard, who lost her left eye and part of her nose. Florida's Catholic bishops had asked Gov. Ron DeSantis to commute the sentence to life without parole, writing that "every human life, given by God, is sacred." DeSantis, who is Catholic, did not intervene. The U.S. Supreme Court denied a final appeal Tuesday. Silvia was Florida's 13th execution this year. |
Stolen Miami Beach Cars Shipped Overseas
Federal agents say a 30-year-old Oakland Park man helped ship stolen luxury cars overseas in containers loaded out of Newark, New Jersey. Miami Beach police arrested Hakam Shahin on July 10 in connection with a stolen Range Rover and a Porsche, neither of which has been found. U.S. Marshals picked him up again on Friday on a federal charge of conspiring to transport stolen vehicles. Thieves used forged work orders to get into transport dispatch systems and reroute cars to addresses where they vanished. Robert Falaguerra watched a video of his Range Rover roll away on a truck outside his South of Fifth condo, bound for Chicago. It never arrived. Agents said they intercepted containers headed for the United Arab Emirates and Togo, and watched Shahin haul a stolen Lamborghini into a Newark lot. He's jailed in Broward County awaiting extradition. |
