Kevin Rideout, a 50-year-old missionary pilot with Charlotte-based Serving in Mission, is free after being held captive for more than nine months in the West African nation of Niger.

Rideout had served as a Christian missionary in Niger for 19 years when he was abducted outside his home in the capital, Niamey, on Oct. 21, 2025. SIM said he is in good health and in the care of U.S. officials.

President Donald Trump announced the release on Truth Social, saying Rideout was back in United States custody after being kidnapped by Jihadi terrorists in West Africa.

U.S. Sen. Ted Budd, R-NC, welcomed the news, and evangelist Franklin Graham called it “an answer to prayer.” Rideout arrived at Ramstein Air Base in Germany for evaluation ahead of a reunion with his wife and four children.

Article Icon 1Stein Vetoes GOP Elections Bill

Gov. Josh Stein, a Democrat, vetoed House Bill 958 on Monday, a Republican elections measure that would cut a week from early voting in primaries.

The bill would shorten primary early voting from 17 days to 10, require the state auditor to run post-election audits in randomly chosen counties, and use federal databases to purge noncitizens and dead voters from the rolls.

Stein called it “anti-voter legislation” that makes voting harder and “invites sore losers” to overturn results, and urged residents to press lawmakers to sustain the veto. Rep. Hugh Blackwell, R-Burke, said the veto “puts politics ahead of common sense,” and state Auditor Dave Boliek said election access in North Carolina has expanded this year.

Lawmakers don’t return to Raleigh until November. House Speaker Destin Hall, R-Caldwell, has vowed to seek an override.

Article Icon 1Audit Reveals CATS Transit Loses Millions

A state audit found Charlotte’s CATS transit system loses an estimated $5 million to $6.5 million a year to fare evasion, with nearly half of riders not paying.

The report from state Auditor Dave Boliek’s office estimates about 45% of riders skip the fare—roughly 60% on the Lynx Blue Line—yet the system collected just $550 in light-rail evasion fines in fiscal 2025.

Auditors said CATS has no turnstiles or gates, and citations dropped from 4,763 in 2023 to 2,018 in 2025 after drivers were told not to enforce fares over fears of assaults.

The review followed the 2025 murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska aboard the Blue Line. It also flagged unspent safety funds and weak police coordination, with just two Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers on a joint transit unit.
