163 Children Recovered in Sweep

Florida law enforcement recovered 163 missing children during a five-day statewide operation, Attorney General James Uthmeier announced on Tuesday.

Operation Statewide Shield, the state's first statewide child-recovery effort, reached into six other states, Puerto Rico, and 12 countries. The children ranged in age from 2 months to 17 years old.

The Tampa Bay region accounted for 46 recoveries, followed by Miami with 41, Jacksonville with 32, and Orlando with 21. Fort Myers logged 12, Pensacola eight, and Tallahassee three. Officials said the cases weren't all tied to trafficking. Some involved custody disputes, foster care, abuse, neglect, or runaways.

Three men have been arrested so far, and more arrests are expected. The children were taken to recovery hubs from Pensacola to Miami for medical care and counseling.

Florida Proposes Cutting 4 School Vaccines

The Florida Department of Health wants to remove hepatitis B, chickenpox, Hib, and pneumococcal shots from the list of vaccines required for public and private school attendance.

Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo approved the proposed rule on Aug. 20, starting a 21-day public comment period. Because those four requirements were written into agency rules rather than state law, the department can erase them without the Legislature.

Vaccines written into state law stay: measles, mumps and rubella, polio, diphtheria, and tetanus. The rule would also widen the religious exemption to cover moral and ethical beliefs. Ladapo and Gov. Ron DeSantis asked lawmakers last September to repeal every vaccine requirement in state law.

Pensacola doctor Joseph Klawitter warned that delaying infant shots can have "devastating results," while family physician Joel Rudman said people have the right to decide what they put in their bodies.

Florida to Limit Cash Welfare Purchases

Gov. Ron DeSantis directed the state on Monday to bar families from using cash welfare benefits to pay for video games, theme park tickets, tattoos, and psychic services.

Florida's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program pays eligible households about $250 per month via an EBT card. Tobacco, vaping, and adult content are also barred; alcohol and gambling already were.

"It's gonna make it more likely that folks are able to get on their feet," DeSantis said.

Eligibility and benefit amounts won't change, interim Children and Families Secretary Kate Williams said. Enforcement starts at stores that take food stamps, where Florida has blocked soda and candy purchases since April.

The state is drafting a formal request to the Trump administration, and DeSantis pointed to Hope Florida's Care Portal as a path to get off of assistance. In June, a federal judge blocked similar SNAP limits, ruling that federal law already defines what food stamps can buy.
