The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) opened a Title IX investigation into Fairfax County Public Schools after allegations that a male student sexually assaulted at least a dozen girls in the hallways of a high school.

The government described the suspect, 18-year-old Israel Christopher Flores Ortiz, as an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who entered the U.S. in 2024. He faces 13 counts and is being held in the county jail without bail.

The DOE posted on social media, "Virginia's experiment with radical gender ideology, race-based admissions systems, far-Left indoctrination, and unlawful discrimination has inflicted immeasurable harm on our students."

The school system said it welcomes the scrutiny. "We are grateful to our law enforcement partners and are continuing to work closely with them as their investigation into this matter moves forward."

Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed legislation yesterday aimed at improving school safety. The new laws will give teachers more training to identify mental health concerns and provide additional support for at-risk students.

Each of the laws signed had passed the General Assembly with bipartisan support.

"Every Virginia parent deserves peace of mind knowing their kids are safe, supported, and set up for success—and that their school is prepared for any emergency," Spanberger said.

The new laws will take effect on July 1, in time for the next school year.

The naked burglar who is being sought in connection with a number of break-ins last month in Centreville has been caught on tape.

Home surveillance footage showed a slim black male approaching a home on Wednesday morning, wearing only sneakers. He attempted to enter the home through a sliding glass door but was unable to open it and eventually left.

The suspect appeared to have an article of clothing wrapped around his head at the time of the most recent burglary attempt.

Authorities suspect the same man targeted four area homes in March, but he does not appear to have stolen anything.
