The Arizona Diamondbacks open their 2026 season today on the road against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks will start ace pitcher Zac Gallen, while the Dodgers counter with 2025 World Series MVP pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Arizona returns a strong core of players, including Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte, after missing last year's playoffs. Analysts view the team as a contender to reach the playoffs this season.

The Diamondbacks' home opener comes Monday night against the Detroit Tigers. See the team's full schedule here.

Fans who attend Monday's home game will be thankful they're not paying Los Angeles prices. Tickets for tonight's Dodger Stadium game are selling for a regular-season record of nearly $400.

Residents in the Saguaro Bloom community of Marana are speaking out after dozens of saguaros were bulldozed for new homes, wiping out desert views they paid a premium to see.

Homeowners allege the builder misrepresented plans, saying crews initially relocated some saguaros before more aggressive clearing left the area largely bare.

Home developer D.R. Horton said the development still meets a requirement that more than 30% of the site remains natural open space. It is also working with a nonprofit to relocate some saguaros.

Saguaros are also protected under Arizona law, but can be removed with permits. Town officials said the builder complied with the permitting rules.

Two Chihuahuas are credited with saving an elderly Shih Tzu after a coyote jumped a backyard fence in Chandler and attacked the Shih Tzu before its two small companions drove the coyote off.

The owner of all three dogs said she woke to barking and saw the attack on camera. She rushed the Shih Tzu to the vet with bite wounds near its jugular. The dog is expected to recover fully.

The owner called the Chihuahuas fearless, saying their tenacity and repeated charges likely saved the third dog's life. She said she plans to make changes to better protect her yard.

Wildlife officials urge residents to supervise pets and remove attractants, saying coyotes are more active during mating season and are drawn by pet food, trash, and small animals.
