Navajo Code Talker Honored

The Gila River Indian Community this week honored 101-year-old Navajo code talker and U.S. Marine veteran Thomas Begay as grand marshal of its 81st Iwo Jima Flag Raising Parade.

Begay was among the Navajo Marines who created and memorized a complex code based on their language, using hundreds of terms to transmit battlefield intelligence across the Pacific.

The enemy never cracked the messages, and their work proved so vital that Major Howard Connor later said, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima."

Begay and fellow Marine veteran Peter MacDonald Sr. are believed to be the last two surviving Navajo code talkers.

State Fifth for Aircraft Laser Strikes

Arizona ranked fifth in the nation for laser strikes on aircraft last year, with 574 incidents reported. See the top 10 rankings.

Nationally, pilots reported 10,994 laser strikes last year—a 14% drop from 2024.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said last year's number remained too high, and noted 337 pilot injuries have been reported since tracking began in 2010.

The FBI warns that shining a laser at an aircraft is a serious federal crime, noting that beams can temporarily blind or disorient pilots and potentially lead to catastrophic consequences.

Offenders face federal criminal penalties of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and a civil fine of up to $11,000 per violation.

New Museum Shows State's Baseball History

The Arizona Baseball Museum opened last weekend in Mesa, chronicling the game's evolution from territorial-era teams to modern Cactus League spring training.

The museum features historic equipment, photographs, and interactive displays, along with tributes to the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series championship.

Housed inside a restored 1930s Works Progress Administration auditorium, the museum also examines baseball's role at the Gila River War Relocation Center during World War II.

Open Tuesday through Saturday, admission costs $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and military personnel, and $4 for youth, with children 5 and under free.
