Unexplained Explosion Shakes Virginia Beach

An unexplained boom rocked homes across the Hampton Roads region on Sunday evening.

Residents said the sound "could have been a sonic boom" and rattled doors and windows in their homes at around 5:30 p.m.

"We don't know what it was as there has been no call for service from anyone's location," authorities with the Virginia Beach Fire Department said.

The Navy said it was aware of the reports but couldn't confirm the source. "Certain atmospheric conditions, such as heavy cloud cover or temperature inversions, can carry sounds from offshore activity farther than normal, sometimes allowing them to be heard or felt onshore," a spokesperson for Naval Air Station Oceana said.

Tech Football Looks Ahead

Students at Virginia Tech said they are looking forward to a fresh start for the school's football team now that head coach Brent Pry has been fired. Pry said coaching the Hokies had been "an incredible honor," and he encouraged fans to back the team under its new leadership.

The university is considering candidates to take over, and former Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick may be in the running. Vick is currently in his first year coaching at Norfolk State.

Other names in the mix include Shane Beamer, Jimbo Fisher, and Pat Fitzgerald.

Meanwhile, the Hokies took a recruiting hit. Four-star offensive tackle Thomas Wilder decommitted after the firing, and current players have 30 days to enter the transfer portal if they wish.

State Recruiting Nursing Home Inspectors

The Virginia Department of Health said it has received hundreds of applications from candidates who want jobs providing oversight to nursing homes in the state.

Christopher Lindsay, the agency's chief operating officer, told lawmakers last week that the state is especially focused on filling 23 vacant long-term care inspector jobs.

Residents and their loved ones across the state have complained about conditions in assisted living homes. "They don't want to give the care and customer service that these individuals need," the daughter of one resident said.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order last month aimed at increasing the oversight of nursing homes in Virginia.
