How much do you know about your cyber-civil rights?

University of Virginia School of Law Professor Danielle Keats Citron knows a lot about them, and she’s fighting on your behalf.

Usually, we get straight to business with “Five Questions,” but since you may not be familiar with Danielle’s work already, we’ll start with her background.

Danielle writes and teaches about privacy, free expression, and civil rights. In 2019, after receiving a host of other awards, she was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for her work on cyberstalking and intimate privacy. She serves as the inaugural director of The Law School’s LawTech Center, which focuses on cutting-edge issues at the intersection of law and technology. If you’re interested in learning more after reading tonight’s column, you can find links to her two books about privacy and hate crimes in cyberspace here. In addition to her books, she has been published in numerous law reviews and in media outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, and Slate. You can watch her appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and her 2019 TED talk on deepfakes. In short, Danielle is a force of nature with lots of expertise to offer on a critically important issue. I’m delighted we are able to have her as our guest for “Five Questions” tonight!
