Wisdom Worth Sharing:The older I get, the more I realize that one of the most attractive traits is genuine enthusiasm. It's energizing to spend time around people who show real excitement for life. For people, ideas, and tiny moments. It takes courage to care so openly. Enthusiasm is contagious. (share to x/twitter!)
Wednesday: How to Reinvent Your Life in 30 DaysLast week, I got an email from a reader that I can’t stop thinking about:
Hi Sahil,
I’d like your advice.
Me: 32-years-old. Working in law. Married. No kids (yet).
Something gnawing at me. Parents are lawyers, so it was all I knew. I basically chose the path as a freshman. Majored in the right things, LSATs, law school, clerking, big law. Followed the track. Parents pleased, I make solid money.
I should be happy, but I’m not. Can’t help but feel that I’m living someone else’s life. I want to change, but it feels too late. So much invested in this path. Don’t want to fall behind on a new one.
What would you do if you were in my shoes?
Every single week, I invariably get a handful of emails from readers around the world with a similar general message. Stuck on a path. Living a life they didn’t really choose. Scared it’s too late to make a change. I started to type a reply, but decided it warranted a deeper, more tactical guide. On Wednesday, I shared how I would approach reinvention (at any age or life stage)... (read the full piece here)
Friday: The Life-Changing Magic of Active OptimismThere’s an old children’s fable I recently retold to my son about a farmer whose wagon wheel gets stuck in the mud. He calls on Hercules to come to his aid. Hercules appears, but rather than lifting the wagon, he speaks: "Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it? Put your shoulder to the wheel." The farmer did so, and the wagon lurched forward as the wheel easily came unstuck. The simple read says this is a story about effort. But it’s also a story that frames one of the most important traits in life: It’s what I call Active Optimism: A belief that things will work out paired with a willingness to do the work to make it true. The key distinction: Passive optimism is just belief. Active optimism is belief that begets action. On Friday, I explored both types and asked a question worth sitting with: Where in your life are you waiting for Hercules instead of putting your shoulder to the wheel? (read the full piece here)
