Democrat Senate nominee James Talarico turned up at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Friday, his first in-person campaign appearance since Sept. 26.

Talarico joined a Sept. 30 forum in Edinburg by video, saying a Dallas urgent care clinic had diagnosed him with the flu. His absence quickly became a daily talking point for Republicans.

Hours before he reappeared, Republican nominee Ken Paxton's campaign launched a tipline asking Texans to report sightings. "Texans shouldn't need a hotline to find the man asking for their vote," spokesperson Madison Cercy said.

Talarico spokesperson JT Ennis shot back that the candidate was "still alive and meeting with voters." He also noted that Paxton hasn't agreed to any of the four debates Talarico has accepted.

Paxton's campaign renewed its call Friday for a doctor's note. Early voting begins Oct. 19, and Talarico has a CNN town hall in Fort Worth on Wednesday.

Reports have surfaced that Lee Gilley, the Houston man accused of killing his pregnant wife, left his Heights home on a bicycle and later boarded a private jet in Memphis, according to sources.

His ankle monitor sent a tamper alert on May 1, weeks before his capital murder trial. Investigators still don't know how he reached Memphis or whether anyone helped.

From Canada, Gilley flew to Milan on forged documents, and an Italian judge ordered him held as an extreme flight risk. Italy wants assurances he won't face execution, and Harris County prosecutors filed a binding notice in September that they won't seek the death penalty.

An Italian court heard new extradition testimony this week but hasn't ruled. Gilley has pleaded not guilty and says he fled because he lost faith in the justice system.

Meanwhile, Christa Bauer Gilley's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit to block him from profiting from her death.

Article Icon 1Camp Mystic Lawsuits Cleared to Resume

A federal bankruptcy judge in Houston ruled Friday that the pause on wrongful death lawsuits against Camp Mystic will end Nov. 9.

Floodwaters killed 25 campers, two counselors, and owner Richard "Dick" Eastland at the Hill Country girls' camp on July 4, 2025. Families' suits have been on hold since the camp filed for bankruptcy in June.

Judge Christopher Lopez held off on the bigger question after a nearly 12-hour hearing: whether the Eastland family keeps control of the bankruptcy or an independent trustee takes over. The hearing resumes Tuesday.

Federal bankruptcy officials want a trustee, and liquidation is on the table. The owners say management changes can address the concerns, and they prefer selling to a buyer who would keep the camp running.

Karen Nicolaou, representing the camp, testified that some Eastland family members live in camp homes without paying rent or utilities.
