Article Icon 1Knox Resident Sues over License Sex Law

A Knox County resident who was born male and identifies as a transgender woman filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Tennessee law that requires driver’s licenses to reflect a person’s sex at birth.

The plaintiff argues the state must honor an amended Illinois birth certificate listing the plaintiff’s sex as female, citing the 14th Amendment and the Constitution’s Full Faith and Credit Clause.

Tennessee used to let people change the sex on their licenses with certain documentation, but the state has since ended that practice, prompting an earlier lawsuit in state court.

State attorneys have argued in a related case that Tennessee doesn’t discriminate by keeping records of a person’s sex at birth.

Tennessee lawmakers may consider adding the firing squad as an execution method after Christa Pike survived two doses of lethal injection drugs last month.

House Speaker Cameron Sexton said several alternatives are on the table, including the firing squad, and that lawmakers need to consult the attorney general on whether lethal injection should remain the primary method.

U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett has also urged the legislature to allow the firing squad, which Pike herself had requested before her execution attempt.

Advocates warn the method carries its own risks, pointing to a 2025 South Carolina execution in which attorneys argued the bullets largely missed the inmate’s heart, a claim state officials dispute.

The SEC fined the University of Tennessee $500,000 after thousands of fans stormed the field at Neyland Stadium following Saturday’s win over Alabama.

The fine could drop to $100,000 if Tennessee can prove it made sufficient efforts to keep fans off the field, under the conference’s policy.

The SEC dropped its escalating fines in 2025 and now charges a flat $500,000 per incident, replacing a system that started at $100,000 for a first offense.

Tennessee fans also rushed the field after wins over Alabama in 2022 and 2024, and in 2022 they tore down a goalpost and dumped it in the Tennessee River.
