The midterms are here. I started Message Box to help you navigate this totally messed-up media environment. Drawing on my campaign experience and my understanding of data and political trends, I help you separate the signal from the noise, know what matters and what doesn't, and know when to have hope and when to freak the fuck out. Three weeks to go. It’s been a wild ride since Trump won the 2024 election. For a long time, things felt hopeless, like Democrats were doomed to wander the desert for a generation. Slowly but surely, things started to brighten. Trump overplayed his hand, ridiculously and predictably. The public caught on and turned on Trump and the Republicans. Led by inspiring candidates from across the ideological spectrum, Democrats found their footing and started fighting back. Now we have a generational opportunity to deliver the accountability Trump so richly deserves. But the job isn’t done. We have three weeks to make the final sale to swing voters and turn out every Democrat possible. Before things get too crazy, I want to say thank you for coming along for the ride, through these midterms and over the six years since I launched the Message Box on a whim. My goal has always been to give you coverage and analysis that cut through the noise and inane chatter so you can understand what really matters. Drawing on my way-too-long experience in politics and my access to polling and data, I’ve tried to paint an honest picture of what’s happening, avoiding the twin traps of telling you what you want to hear and pure doomerism. Threading that needle isn’t the fastest way to grow a newsletter, because the algorithms reward the extremes. But I’m in this for the long haul, and I want to earn your trust. Some people on Substack launch a newsletter, get their fans to sign up, and then barely produce anything. They’re counting on you not checking your email or your credit card statement. For six years, I’ve put out two to three posts every week, sometimes more. When big news breaks or an important poll drops, I drop what I’m doing and write. I’m building a real media business, one that delivers value to readers and strengthens a growing pro-democracy media ecosystem that can fight back against MAGA media. This newsletter is supported entirely by readers. If you’re not yet a paid subscriber, I’d be grateful for your support. Trump has jacked up the price of everything, so I understand if it’s not in the budget right now. But if it is, you’ll get access to everything I write, the full six-year archive, and the chance to take part in the weekly mailbags and Q&As. You’ll also be helping sustain a pro-democracy outlet that isn’t owned by a MAGA billionaire. And there will be no break after the midterms. I’ll pivot immediately to analyzing the results with data, not conventional wisdom or hot takes, so you can understand what happened, why, and what it means for 2028. If you want to channel your anxiety into action, I highly recommend visiting Vote Save America to find the best way to help in your area. Good luck over the next few weeks. Stay sane, and let’s run through the tape together. You're currently a free subscriber to The Message Box. For the full experience, upgrade your subscription.
