The Week Ahead: We headed into the week with a look at what the administration might turn to now that the Supreme Court has rejected its plan to use USPS to keep mail ballots out of the hands of Democratic voters—and it looks like voter intimidation and potential attempts to invalidate election results. Meanwhile, a developing situation where DOJ officials are threatening prosecutors across the country that they will lose their jobs if they refuse to pursue meritless cases; a hearing in one of the slush fund cases; and another lawsuit was filed challenging the administration’s ability to send armed agents to polling sites as part of its aggressive “immigration enforcement” work. The Wolf Came As A Wolf: Trump and the First Amendment: Monday morning, MS NOW, CNN & POLITICO sued Donald Trump for banning them from the White House. He did that because he doesn’t like their reporting about him; he made that very clear. The plaintiffs argued that Trump violated their First and Fifth Amendments rights. As we discussed Saturday night, there’s no doubt that they are correct. We went in-depth to understand the lawsuit and developments in this important case. Live with Indivisible’s Ezra Levin: On October 17, Americans will get together nationwide to make plans to vote in the midterm election. That will look different depending on where you live and that’s the point. Indivisible’s Ezra Levin joined us to talk about why he is confident we can win a free and fair election and why we need to all work together towards that goal. If you missed us live, take a few minutes to watch now. Ezra’s enthusiasm is catching. A Bad Tuesday in Maine if Your Name is Susan Collins: ProPublica had new reporting on Susan Collins and on corruption in Trump’s DOJ. This is the headline: “The FBI Anti-Corruption Squad Was Circling Susan Collins — Until Trump Got in the Way.” It’s an incredible report on the consequences of a Justice Department where public corruption stops being a priority. Listen to the Hearing in CNN et al v. Trump Today: On Wednesday, I sent out the info you needed to access the hearing in the case brought by CNN, MSNOW, and Politico against the Trump administration for banning them from the White House grounds. Remember that many judges are offering phone and access for important hearings, even though there are not camera cameras in federal courts. King Trump: Privileges, Not Rights: We’ve speculated that Trump’s “ban” on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico was not a policy that had been thought out in advance, but rather something the President launched off the cuff on Truth Social. It looks more and more like that’s the case. One of the worst aspects of what he’s done is trying to reclassify the free press as a question of privilege and who gets access to the White House, instead of the fundamental right we all rely on to have information about what our government is up to. What Happened to Liberal Democracy?: Nobel laureate economist Daron Acemoglu joined us live Thursday morning to discuss his new book, What Happened to Liberal Democracy? Our conversation focused on the challenges we face with AI and how it could, with smart stewardship, become a tool that makes life better for working class people, instead of a threat to their jobs. Hard Pass: Just after midnight Wednesday night, Judge Kelly entered an order directing the president to unban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House grounds. He issued a 14-day Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) restoring hard passes for journalists working for those media outlets. We looked at the order and followed the fallout and the administration’s response (or lack thereof) throughout the day, all against the backdrop of Xi Jinping’s visit to the White House. Five Questions with Jennifer Weiss-Wolf: Law Professor Jennifer Weiss-Wolf has written a new book about menopause. What might this have to do with democracy and Civil Discourse? A lot more than you might think. Read about the issues and about the block of committed voters some people find it easy to ignore.
