Hegseth to Cut 20% of Generals, Admirals

War Secretary Pete Hegseth will announce today a 20% cut to the positions reserved for generals and admirals, doubling the reduction he ordered last year.

The cuts apply to slots, not the officers filling them now. Some jobs will be downgraded so that colonels and Navy captains can hold them, and the services have until this Jan. 1 to complete the work.

Last year's order trimmed 10% of all generals and admirals and 20% of four-stars, which Hegseth summed up as "Less Generals, more GIs."

The announcement lands one year to the day after he summoned hundreds of generals to Quantico and told those who didn't back his reforms to step aside. This year's audience is junior officers and enlisted troops picked for fitness and grooming standards, some of whom will work out with him.

30M Face Hurricane Polo Flood Risk

Hurricane Polo made landfall on Mexico's Baja peninsula early Tuesday as a Category 2 with 110 mph winds, and what's left of it arrives in the U.S. today.

Flash flood watches stretch from Phoenix to Des Moines, putting more than 30 million people at risk. Roads in southern New Mexico were already underwater Tuesday.

Texas gets the worst of it next. Dallas-Fort Worth is looking at 1 to 4 inches starting today and running through Thursday.

Polo peaked at 180 mph over the weekend, tied for the third-strongest storm ever recorded in the eastern Pacific. It went from 45 mph to 150 mph in a single day, a jump forecasters called "truly remarkable."

Protests Send Evicted 87-Year-Old Home

An 87-year-old woman, who was carried out of her Madrid, Spain, apartment after 70 years, is going home after thousands of people flooded her neighborhood in protest, her lawyer said Monday.

María del Carmen Abascal moved in at 17 and paid about $570 a month until an investment fund bought the building in 2018 and raised her rent to more than $3,000, significantly more than her monthly pension.

Police carried her out on a stretcher on Sept. 23 after giving her 30 minutes to pack. Crowds chanting "Shame on you" filled the streets that night; 25,000 marched Saturday, by the police count, and tents took over Madrid's main square. See the protest camp here.

Under the deal, her rent is capped at 30% of her income for eight years, no more than the $570 she paid before. She will sign once she leaves the hospital, where she is being treated for exhaustion. On Tuesday, Spain's government proposed eviction protections through 2030 and a ban on "vulture fund" purchases.
