Ohio Sues Seinfeld-Famous Retailer

Ohio is suing the Blue Ash-based J. Peterman Company, the real-life catalog retailer parodied on Seinfeld, alleging the retailer failed to issue refunds for canceled orders and returned merchandise, and made it difficult or impossible for customers to reach customer service.

The company appears to have shut down after nearly four decades in business. Its websites stopped accepting orders, its customer service and corporate phone numbers were disconnected, and an August court filing said its retail business is closed.

Founded in 1987, J. Peterman became a pop-culture fixture after Seinfeld introduced an eccentric fictional version of founder John Peterman.

Ohioans Celebrate Labor Day Statewide

Ohioans have one final day of Labor Day celebrations ahead, featuring parades, festivals, and family events scheduled in central Ohio and across the state.

The Cleveland National Air Show continues today in northeast Ohio, featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, running parallel with the final day of Cleveland Oktoberfest.

In Toledo, the city’s Labor Day Parade steps off at 9 a.m. downtown at the intersection of Monroe and Summit streets.

Southwest Ohio celebrated with the 50th annual Riverfest last night, while today, Stricker’s Grove opens its privately owned amusement park to the public.

Ex-Buckeye Sues over Michigan Scandal

Former Ohio State and Michigan linebacker Joey Velazquez is suing CBS for defamation, alleging a 2025 CBS Detroit report falsely implied he lied to NCAA investigators during Michigan’s sign-stealing probe.

The complaint alleges that former Michigan analyst Connor Stalions recruited Velazquez in 2023 to review opponent film that “was not broadcast film,” including film of Ohio State practices allegedly obtained via in-person advance scouting.

Velazquez also alleges Stalions later urged him to lie to investigators. Velazquez says he recorded the call, turned it over to the NCAA, and fully cooperated with the investigation.

CBS didn’t name Velazquez in its report, but his lawsuit says the details were sufficient to identify him. Velazquez says he and his family received about 5,000 hateful messages, including death threats.
