Today's newsletter is proudly supported by Latin Remote Workers 🎉
Struggling to find top-tier talent without breaking the bank? I teamed up with Latin Remote Workers after meeting their founder, Ricardo, at my Indie Hackers of San Diego meetup. When I needed a marketing assistant for Conversion Factory, Ricardo delivered a vetted pro in just two weeks—someone who’s been a total game-changer. With Latin Remote Workers, you get skilled, English-fluent professionals from Latin America, saving up to 70% compared to U.S. salaries, all while overlapping with your workday. Mention “Corey” or “Swipe Files” for $500 off your first hire.

This IndieHackers post stuck with me:
The summary, in two moves:
- Cut the free trial from 30 days to 7 days. Conversions doubled.
- Gamify the 7-day trial — one product action unlocks one extra trial day. Conversions doubled again.
Two experiments. Two doublings. The compounded effect is a 4x conversion lift from changes that cost nothing to ship. Why the shorter trial winsThe standard 30-day SaaS trial is a relic. The thinking behind it is "give the user enough time to evaluate." The actual behavior on the user's side is "I'll think about it later" — and later turns into never. A 7-day trial creates urgency that 30 days never does. The user knows they have a week. They either set up the product and use it, or they let the trial expire. Most 30-day trial users never even open the product after day 2. Shorter trial = the user has to engage now, or they self-disqualify. The counterargument is "but my product is complex, users need time." Usually that's a tell that the onboarding is the problem, not the trial length. If a user can't get value in 7 days, they probably won't get it in 30 either — they'll just resent paying after a month of confusion. Why the gamified trial extension winsGamification gets dismissed as a gimmick. The IndieHackers data argues it isn't. The mechanic — complete one product action, get one extra day — works because:
- Each action both extends the trial AND demonstrates value. The user is forced to actually use the thing they're getting more time on. The action is the activation.
- The reward isn't cash or coupons. It's the thing the user already came for (more time with the product). No discount erosion.
- It creates a self-selecting funnel. Users who engage with the actions are already qualifying themselves for conversion. Users who don't engage drop off without consuming sales attention.
The combination — shorter trial + earnable extension — converts both the impatient user (who acts fast on the 7-day clock) and the careful user (who buys themselves more time by actually using the product). You're optimizing for two opposite buyer types with the same mechanic. What to steal this weekIf you currently run a 30-day trial:
- Cut it to 7 or 14 days. Don't grandfather existing trial users — start the next cohort fresh and measure. The IndieHackers post is permission to do this; the data is already on your side.
- Identify the 3-5 product actions that correlate most with conversion. Onboarding completion, first integration, first invited teammate, first published asset — whatever your activation moments are.
- Wire each action to +1 trial day. Surface it inline ("Connect Slack to get one more day"). Don't bury it in an email.
- Track conversion separately for users who earned days vs. didn't. That data tells you which actions actually matter for conversion (not just engagement).
Most SaaS trial optimization is theater. This is one of the few patterns where the lever is real and the math compounds. —Corey
