Cities Split After Flock Camera Order

Sumter County has pulled every Flock camera it owns, including ones on sheriff's speed trailers and at county parks the state order never covered.

Sumter's sheriff had already suspended the program after a former detective was charged with using Flock data to track her husband's ex-wife.

DeSantis' order gave agencies until Sept. 30 to clear license plate readers off the State Highway System, leaving city and county roads untouched.

Palm Beach County commissioners voted 7-0 to freeze new permits and pressed the sheriff's office, which runs 83 cameras, on how long it keeps the data. Commissioner Maria Sachs said one camera recovered her stolen truck.

Nine are coming down in Alachua, where Police Chief Jesse Sandusky defended the technology while reviewing department policy.

Jacksonville Beach is complying only on state roads. Chief Gene Paul Smith said the department will keep using the readers wherever they're legally allowed.

Judge in 2000 Recount Is Buried

N. Sanders Sauls, the Tallahassee circuit judge who presided over the Bush v. Gore recount case, was buried on Thursday, He died on Aug. 29 at 84.

In December 2000, Sauls denied Al Gore's contest of Florida's certified results. The Florida Supreme Court reversed him and ordered manual recounts, and the U.S. Supreme Court halted those recounts days later.

Sauls, a registered Democrat appointed to the bench in 1989 by Republican Gov. Bob Martinez, sat on the Second Circuit until August 2011. Barry Richard, who argued the recount case before him, remembered a judge who kept his composure with the world watching.

"He ran a very disciplined courtroom, but he wasn't stern," Richard said.

Frank Allman, the circuit's current chief judge, praised Sauls' fairness and integrity in a statement Thursday. Graveside services and a celebration of life were held the same day, according to his obituary.

Florida Teams Enter Week 1

Florida’s Week 1 college football schedule stretches through Labor Day, with Florida hosting Florida Atlantic tonight and Florida State facing No. 19 SMU on Monday.
