$5M More in Hurricane Aid OK'd

Georgia communities will receive about $5 million in new FEMA funding for recovery and mitigation projects tied to Hurricane Helene, COVID-19, and other disasters.

The largest award sends nearly $2 million to Savannah's Stormwater Master Plan, part of more than $3 million flowing through the agency's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Other grants include $1 million for Excelsior Electric Membership Corporation, $499,000 for Piedmont Hospital, $520,000 for a statewide generator project, and $185,000 for White County warning sirens.

The awards are part of $348 million in grants announced for nearly 170 projects nationwide.

Metro Atlanta Maps Housing Future

The Atlanta Regional Commission previewed Housing Forward 2035, a plan to build 367,000 new homes and preserve 104,000 affordable units across 11 metro counties by 2035.

The study's three focus areas are keeping up with population growth, developing low-income housing, and addressing vacant properties. A commission vote on the plan could come late this year.

ARC CEO Anna Roach said the region's current approach to housing will meet only 25% of demand for households earning under $55,000 by 2035, among other shortfalls.

The plan encourages local governments to develop their own strategies while recommending that communities steer development toward job centers and transit and better utilize vacant properties and lots.

Airport Buries Time Capsule

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport leaders buried a time capsule on Stogner Hill this week, sealing a century of aviation memories until 2126.

The capsule holds items including copies of the first piece of mail delivered to Atlanta by plane, marking milestones from a grass runway to the world's busiest airport.

The airport traces its start to an abandoned racetrack that became Candler Field, where the first scheduled mail flight landed in September 1926.

A letter from General Manager Ricky Smith to future stewards expresses hope the airport still connects people to opportunity.
