Heat Wave Hits Ohio

Ohio is in for a hot start to September as summer heat returns, with highs near 90 or warmer across much of the state and humidity building as strong high pressure settles over the region.

Temperatures are expected to push into the low 90s on Tuesday across northeast Ohio, with Wednesday set to be the hottest day of the week, with heat indices nearing 100 before a cold front brings storms and cooler air.

The story is much the same for central Ohio, with temperatures rising as high as 97 by midweek. Most of the region should stay dry until shower and thunderstorm chances return later in the week.

The late-summer heat comes as AccuWeather forecasts a mild fall for Ohio, with alternating wet and dry stretches, occasional bursts of late-summer warmth, and even the possibility of early snow in northeast Ohio before fall ends.

Clock Change Divides Ohio Economists

Ohio economists are split over permanent daylight saving time as Congress continues to weigh whether Americans should stop changing their clocks twice a year.

In a survey of 15 Ohio economists, seven said the current clock-changing system hurts the economy, six disagreed, and one was uncertain. Economists were even less convinced that permanent daylight saving time would improve health or quality of life.

The U.S. House passed the Sunshine Protection Act this summer, which would keep daylight saving time year-round. In the western part of the state, that could mean winter sunrises around 9 a.m., trading darker mornings for later evening sunlight.

A separate proposal still in a House committee would establish permanent standard time while allowing states to choose permanent daylight saving time. Under year-round standard time, some U.S. cities could see summer sunrises before 5 a.m.

Hot Air Balloon Makes Unusual Landing

A hot air balloon made a planned landing in a Delaware County neighborhood Saturday evening after winds slowed near the end of its flight, drawing families outside for an unexpected close-up look.

Pilot Russ Jurg of Columbus Aeronauts landed near Merrick Boulevard and Stonhope Drive in the Lantern Chase subdivision around 7:15 p.m. after about an hour in the air. A family celebrating multiple birthdays was aboard the balloon.

Jurg said the landing was routine, not an emergency. He said he chose a road without power lines that his chase vehicle could easily reach, and no one was hurt. Jurg later fired the balloon's burner so neighborhood children could see the flame up close.
