Flock Safety Announces Changes

Atlanta-based Flock Safety is overhauling its license plate camera network amid public scrutiny and law enforcement abuse.

The changes, which will become mandatory by Jan. 1, 2027, will cut the length of time the company stores license plate data from 30 days to seven and require law enforcement customers to enter a case number for most searches and use an audit tool that locks out users flagged for abnormal activity.

The changes follow recent Georgia cases, including Savannah police terminating six employees and four Richmond County Sheriff’s Office employees being arrested and fired for allegedly misusing license plate readers.

Nationwide, at least 46 cases have involved law enforcement officers accused of misusing the platform, which operates 120,000 cameras throughout the U.S.

Bomb Threats Hit North Georgia Schools

Schools in two North Georgia counties received bomb threats this week that investigators believe came from an AI-generated voice.

The threats prompted Jackson County Schools to cancel classes Friday after six schools received threats. An employee found the first message on a phone line around 4:30 a.m. Authorities searched all six campuses in roughly three hours and turned up no explosives.

In neighboring Hall County, Cherokee Bluff High School received a similar threat on Friday morning, and students returned to class after authorities completed searching the premises.

Investigators are determining whether threats were made against schools in other districts.

Georgia’s Heat Wave Expected to Continue

High temperatures are forecast across the state next week after a heat advisory was issued for the majority of Georgia on Friday.

A stretch of extreme heat is expected across South Georgia early next week, with daytime temperatures forecast to reach triple digits on Monday through Wednesday. Metro Atlanta could experience similar numbers.

In coastal Georgia, heat indices could reach or surpass 112 degrees, with Savannah's Tuesday high expected to reach 100.

In Athens, University of Georgia officials are preparing for a sweltering start to the fall semester and keeping a close eye on campus cooling systems with temperatures beyond 95 degrees predicted.
