Aerospace Firm to Bring 2,000 Jobs to Springfield

Electra will invest $850 million to build its first production plant at AirPark Ohio near Springfield, creating nearly 2,000 new jobs.

The Virginia-based company plans to produce up to 800 hybrid-electric EL9 Ultra Short aircraft a year at the Clark County site next to Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport. The nine-passenger EL9 is designed to take off and land in as little as 150 feet.

CEO Marc Allen said the region that helped launch aviation's first era will now help build its next one. Electra's backers include Lockheed Martin Ventures, Honeywell, and Safran, and its customers include the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, and NASA.

First flight of the EL9 is expected in late 2027 or early 2028, making the project one of the region's largest economic development announcements this year.

Ohio EPA Abandons Data Center Permit Plan

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has decided not to move forward with a proposed statewide wastewater discharge permit for data centers, opting instead to require each project to undergo its own individual permitting process.

The proposal said, "A lowering of water quality of various waters of the state associated with granting coverage under this permit is necessary to accommodate important social and economic development in the state of Ohio."

The agency said it received a significant volume of public comments opposing the proposed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System general permit.

Historic Granville Inn Sets Reopening Date

The Buxton Inn, one of Ohio's oldest continuously operating inns, has set a Sept. 23 date for its grand reopening following a sale to new owners.

New England Development Co., a Worthington firm that previously owned the Worthington Inn, bought the 214-year-old Granville landmark this spring after months on the market and two price cuts. Broker Brandon Hess, who handled the sale, called former owner Robert Schilling "a very special guy" for finding the right buyer.

The inn, which first opened in 1812, has hosted Presidents Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Harrison, and William McKinley and has been rumored to be Ohio's most haunted inn. It also once served as Granville's first post office.

The inn said on social media the Sept. 23 reopening will include a ribbon-cutting with Gov. Mike DeWine and a gala benefiting the Granville Historical Society.
