Good morning! On this day in 1878, notorious outlaw Black Bart robbed a Wells Fargo stagecoach in California, stealing less than $400 and a passenger’s diamond ring and watch. A taunting poem signed “Black Bart” was found inside the recovered empty safe box. See the poem here. Our question yesterday asking readers about their old-world skills brought in some great stories. We heard from readers who still split their own firewood every year, along with those who take pride in knowing how to change a tire, repair a fence, sew a button, sharpen a knife, can vegetables, bake from scratch, or tackle just about any household repair without calling for help. Some of the skills were a bit more uncommon, like the reader who made an effort to keep writing in cursive, the couple who built their own home (not paid to have it built, but built it), and our favorite, the gentleman who calculates the square root of a number using pencil and paper every night, just to make sure he still can. For our part, it was great to see so much appreciation for being able to do things with your own two hands and brain.  Trump Weighs 'Massive' Iran Strike
President Trump said he was weighing a "massive attack" on Iran that would be "bigger than ever before" in the wake of Iran bombing military bases in Jordan. The threat came as the U.S. completed a 13th straight night of strikes on Iranian military targets, following Houthi terrorist strikes on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking at an Asian security conference in the Philippines, said Trump's policy toward Tehran amounts to "a head for an eye" and that Iran "will pay a very heavy price for the things they’re doing." Meanwhile, the U.S. and U.K. are planning a conference in London next week on protecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. |
Passengers Survive Fiery Seaplane CrashA Kenmore Air seaplane crashed and burst into flames Thursday evening near Washington state's San Juan Islands after the pilot attempted an emergency landing, but all 10 passengers and the pilot somehow survived. The de Havilland DHC-3 Otter left Seattle's Lake Union around 4:30 p.m. bound for Roche Harbor. About 45 minutes later, the aircraft went down in Shallow Bay near Sucia Island, erupting into a fireball after hitting the water. This video shows the fiery wreckage. The Coast Guard, local first responders, and nearby boaters pulled everyone aboard from the water. One person was in critical condition, with other injuries including broken bones and head trauma. The FAA and NTSB are investigating, and Kenmore, the nation's largest seaplane airline, canceled all Friday flights. |
