It was over six years ago now that many of us picked up new hobbies and habits to occupy ourselves during the pandemic. We started taking walks. We started cooking or baking. Some of us stopped drinking. Some of us started doing 50 pushups when we woke up. Some of us stopped watching the news or quit social media.
That energy feels far away now.
Those last few years were hard in a way that nobody expected. What we’d thought would go on for a few months dragged on, not unlike the plague of Marcus Aurelius’s time, stretching everyone’s ability to remain disciplined and focused. As a result, many of us slipped. We picked up bad habits. Fell back into old ways. The gym stopped. The food delivery started. The drinking came back.
So here we are, all these years later. Not exactly where we’d like to be. Not exactly who we’d like to be.
There’s never a bad time to take what they call in recovery “a fearless moral inventory.” An honest look at yourself, your habits, your practices. Then ask yourself: Which of these are working for me and which aren’t? What did I pick up over the last few years that I need to let go of? What did I start doing that really seems to be working and how can I recommit to that?
Epictetus said, “Every habit and capability is confirmed and grows in its corresponding actions, walking by walking, and running by running ... therefore, if you want to do something, make a habit of it.”
You know this is true. The question is whether you’re going to do anything about it.
This is exactly why we created the Daily Stoic Habits for Success, Habits for Happiness Challenge—a system that jump-starts your path to becoming a person who sticks to what you commit to. Each day for six weeks, you’ll work on building a good habit or releasing a bad one. You’ll learn research-backed tactics for turning these positive changes into daily action. You’ll understand the habit-building framework and how to apply it for lasting change.
