Here’s the highlight reel of last week’s posts and events. It was quite a week, and if you felt like you were watching a ping-pong match trying to keep up with all the court cases, you’re not alone. Grab a cup of coffee and get ready to catch up on anything you may have missed.
The Week Ahead: On the fourth anniversary of the newsletter, we focused on the lawsuit challenging Trump's White House cage fights and on Kristen Welker's remarkable refusal to let false claim after false claim go unanswered on Meet The Press. We acknowledged the increasing sense over the last few weeks that Trump's grip is loosening.
The Autocracy, Democracy & Kleptocracy Series: Live with Lauren Groh-Wargo: Lauren Groh-Wargo of Fair Fight is committed to Good Trouble. As Georgia Republicans try and take the state back to the days of Jim Crow when it comes to voting rights, we discussed a major protest being planned and Lauren wants your help. Listen in if you missed it!
An Update on Trump’s Birthday Celebration: We addressed a flurry of activity in Douglas v. NPS, the cage fights lawsuit. Ultimately, Trump won this one in court, but we’ll be tuned in today because it’s unlikely the spectacle on the White House lawn will be a win in the court of public opinion.
Election Day in Maine: Could Democratic power turn on whether or not Democratic nominee Graham Platner wins in Maine in November? We take a look at the divisive nominee and Maine’s ranked choice voting.
The Autocracy, Democracy, and Kleptocracy Series: Live with Louise Jones: How do you find the strength to run as a Democrat in a red state? Louise Jones (Doug is her husband; she’s all in on his campaign to be Alabama’s next governor) exemplifies it and explains the stakes and what it takes.
The Autocracy, Democracy & Kleptocracy Series: Live with the good ones, Mary Trump & Joyce Vance: In case you haven’t noticed, Mary and I have “those” last names—Trump and Vance. So we decided to have a live chat about what we would do if we were in the White House.
Today’s Legal Update: On a Thursday that felt more like a Week Ahead, we touched down on important cases in progress: the slush-fund case in Virginia, an Alabama death penalty decision from SCOTUS, the White House cage fight challenge, and the latest attempts from Trump to rewrite history.
About Youth Voting: Live with Laura Brill: Laura Brill runs the Civics Center in California, which helps young people get registered to vote as soon as they’re eligible. Data suggests that if you can get people to register, they’re very likely to vote, so this is extremely important work. If you need an uplifting conversation about what’s going right, this is it!
The Follow Up: We got some closure and more legal analysis on the cases discussed Thursday night, along with a new disturbing development out of Ohio and an anticipated livestream at the [not Trump] Kennedy Center.
Five Questions with Jake Sullivan and Jon Finer: Jake and Jon, veteran experts at translating raw intelligence into policy advice, joined us to discuss the unique role of the Director of National Intelligence and the potential costs of Trump’s loyalty-based nominations.
Live with John Harwood: I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with John, who brings three decades of experience in journalism to the table.
Autocracy, Democracy, and Kleptocracy: As we enter our fifth year together at Civil Discourse, we reflect on our greatest strength, our work together and our support for each other, and our power as citizens in the face of all the awful.
Thanks for being here with me, as we head into this fifth year of Civil Discourse together! These are complicated legal times, and it’s easy for the truth to get lost in the chaos. Civil Discourse doesn’t just track today’s headlines—it connects them to the legal and political history that explains why they matter. We won’t forget what’s at stake, or let Trump and his allies rewrite the past. You can subscribe to Civil Discourse for free and get clear analysis that helps you see the whole picture, delivered straight to your inbox. If you’re in a position to do so, your paid subscription helps me devote the time and resources it takes to write the newsletter. That means everyone has access to information they can share with friends and family—a constructive act we can all participate in right now, helping more Americans understand how critical this moment is.
We’re in this together,
Joyce
