In February, Dakotah Rice announced a $47M Series A for Harper, the largest publicly disclosed Series A ever by a Black founder. In 13 months, they’ve served 5,000+ businesses across 35 states.
They started by selling AI tools to existing brokers. Adoption didn’t happen. So they became the brokerage themselves. The core thesis is that AI lowers the coordination cost of running a service business enough that, for the first time, a software-native operator can compete at scale with incumbents.
We get into why the software-into-industry approach failed, what running a brokerage actually looks like day to day (“It’s messy. It’s very messy.”), the cofounder relationship that survived a failed first company (Poolit), and how he thinks about hiring, training, and escalation at scale.
