You swear you were just in your twenties and now, here you are, looking at an invite to your twenty-year reunion. You remember those early months of the pandemic like it was yesterday, except it wasn’t just yesterday, it was six years ago.The 2020s are more than halfway done. The century is more than 25 percent done!
Your babies aren’t babies anymore. You’re not young. Albums and movies you remember coming out are now celebrating anniversaries. Athletes you remember being drafted are retiring after long careers.
The Roman poet Virgil said, fugit irreparabile tempus. Time flies irretrievably.
Whole blocks of your life go by like that. And you barely notice as it’s happening. Presidential administrations. Winter olympics to summer olympics. Births. Graduations. Weddings. Funerals.
This is happening and it’s happening in one direction.
We have to pay attention. Seneca reminds us that time “will cause no commotion to remind you of its swiftness, but glide on quietly. It will not lengthen itself for a king’s command or a people’s favor.” Don’t waste it. Don’t miss it. Don’t miss your opportunity to make the most of the moments that turn into months, that turn into years, that turn into decades, and disappear as soon as they pass.
Make the most of Stoic wisdom—of reminders like these that can improve your life—by joining us for Meditations Month. This month only, I’ll be rereading Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations alongside our Daily Stoic Community with our How to Read Meditations Digital Guide. In addition to the 11 in-depth modules of the guide, we’re having discussions on our private platform and I'm hosting a live Q&A on April 27th, where I'll take your questions.
