DeSantis Signs Voter ID Bill

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 991, a sweeping elections bill requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, on Wednesday. Within minutes, voting rights groups filed a federal lawsuit challenging the measure.

"This bill protects and expands integrity in our voter registration process," DeSantis said.

After the signing, attorney Marc Elias filed a federal lawsuit contending the legislation violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments by placing unconstitutional burdens on voters and threatening to disenfranchise eligible citizens. Elias called it "a new voter suppression law."

The law, described as a statewide version of the federal Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, isn't set to take effect until after the midterm elections.

Coral Springs Vice Mayor Killed

Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead on Wednesday after a "domestic violence incident," and her husband has been arrested for her murder.

Stephen Bowen, 40, is facing charges of premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Nancy Bowen was appointed as vice mayor in 2025, after initially being elected to the city commission in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. She also served as Vice Chair of Haitian American Voter Engagement for the Florida Democratic Party.

City Manager Catherine Givens said, "Today is a very dark day for us in Coral Springs."

Panama City Unveils Updated Marina Design

City leaders and residents viewed updated renderings for the downtown marina on Wednesday, following a series of public feedback meetings, part of an improvement project underway since 2019.

"We heard a number of ideas.... There are a number of things that we just heard over and over again. And so, we tried to make sure those were the things that we were drawing," Dover, Kohl & Partners Principal Amy Groves said.

The designs prioritize public access, marina infrastructure, a seamless connection to Harrison Avenue, and walkability.
