Glendale Marine Tied to Weapons Scheme

A Glendale-native Marine is in federal custody after prosecutors say he stole a Javelin anti-tank missile system and tens of thousands of rounds of military ammunition from a California base and sold them in Arizona.

Cpl. Andrew Paul Amarillas, 23, an ammunition technician formerly stationed at Camp Pendleton, is accused of carrying out the scheme.

Amarillas was arrested in Quantico, Virginia, during training and later indicted by a federal grand jury in Arizona on theft and weapons charges. He pleaded not guilty this week in Phoenix and is being held without bail as a flight risk.

Investigators have recovered at least one weapon-related item but believe he may be responsible for about 2 million rounds of M855 ammunition that remain unaccounted for.

Burro Removal Planned at Lake Pleasant

The Bureau of Land Management will begin removing up to 1,500 wild burros from the Lake Pleasant area on Wednesday to reduce the herd and address public safety and resource concerns.

Officials say the current population of about 2,300 animals far exceeds the approved range of 140 to 250, as urban growth has reduced habitat and increased burro-vehicle collisions and neighborhood encounters.

The roundup will use bait and water trap corrals, with priority given to animals straying onto roads, neighborhoods, and private land.

Captured burros will be transported to a holding facility in Florence, where they will be prepared for adoption or sale through the agency’s program.

NFL Eyes Rule Changes in Phoenix Meetup

NFL officials are meeting in Phoenix this week to address potential rule changes along with broader priorities including player safety, officiating standards, and game operations.

Proposed changes include allowing replay officials to assist on certain missed penalties, tweaks to the dynamic kickoff alignment, and expanded use of technology such as virtual measurements.

Additional topics include international expansion, artificial intelligence, and the growth of flag football at the youth and international levels.

The competition committee is also preparing contingency plans for replacement officials as labor talks with the referees union stall.
