Miami TV News Anchor Runs for Congress

Veteran Miami TV news anchor and longtime South Florida resident Eliott Rodriguez, 69, announced his candidacy for U.S. Congress on Tuesday in hopes of unseating Republican U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar in Florida's 27th Congressional District.

Rodriguez retired from CBS News Miami in December after more than two decades on air and nearly five decades as an Emmy-winning journalist. He is seeking the Democratic nomination in the competitive Miami-Dade County district.

Rodriguez framed his candidacy around concerns about affordability, immigration, and what he described as growing political division in Washington. "I didn't plan to run for Congress. But I cannot stay silent," Rodriguez said.

His entrance into the race could set up an ex-reporter vs. ex-reporter battle in November. Like Rodriguez, Salazar was a prominent journalist for over 35 years and an Emmy-winning reporter for Spanish-language news organizations.

Rodriguez joins a competitive primary that includes entrepreneur Richard Lamondin, 38, and former investigator and prosecutor Robin Peguero, 40. Last week, Lev Parnas, 54, a key figure in President Trump's first impeachment, announced he would run as a Democrat.

New Record for Returned Unclaimed Property

February set a record as the biggest month ever for unclaimed property and assets being returned to owners in Florida, according to CFO Blaise Ingoglia, who said the Department of Financial Services returned about $88 million in unclaimed property.

Millions were distributed across every corner of the state. The Tampa region led with $23.8 million returned. Miami followed closely behind with $18.8 million, while the Orlando area saw $14.4 million returned to its rightful owners.

Unclaimed property consists of assets that have been abandoned for 5 years or more. The state has highly publicized its Florida Treasure Hunt program, where residents can visit the state's website and enter their names to see if they have unclaimed assets.

Items recovered are often stocks, dividends, or credit balances, but can also include contents from abandoned safe deposit boxes, including jewelry and watches, rare coins, stamps, and historical artifacts.

Vaccine Exemption Bill Dies in House

The Florida Senate approved a bill (SB 1756) expanding the exemptions parents of schoolchildren can use to opt out of commonly administered childhood vaccines. Speaker Daniel Perez said the House won't take it up before the legislative session ends this Friday.

Sponsored by Jacksonville's Republican Sen. Clay Yarborough, the Medical Freedom Act would allow parents to opt out of school vaccination requirements based on personal beliefs and require doctors to provide state-approved information outlining the benefits and risks of vaccines.

Supporters say it would protect parental rights, while critics, including some Republicans, warned the changes could undermine vaccination rates and public health, particularly during a measles outbreak.
