Lawmakers Tackle Food Stamp Error Rates

State House lawmakers passed a bill requiring families applying for food stamps to undergo tighter citizenship and eligibility verification.

The measure, sponsored by state Rep. Martin Momtahan, R-Dallas, aims to reduce the state's 15.6% SNAP payment error rate and avoid federal penalties tied to new rules taking effect this fall. The measure would also limit where families can use food stamps.

The bill passed with a 95-66 vote and awaits action in the state Senate, with supporters saying verification will ensure benefits go to qualified households and protect taxpayers, while critics say added paperwork could make it harder for eligible families to access aid.

Hawks Extend Streak in Playoff Push

The Atlanta Hawks' 124-112 win over Dallas on Tuesday stretched their winning streak to seven games and kept alive their push for a guaranteed playoff spot.

Atlanta sits in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, 2.5 games behind sixth-place Miami and the final guaranteed playoff spot. Teams that finish in seventh through 10th place in each conference qualify for the play-in tournament.

Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Dyson Daniels have helped steady a team that has spent much of the season dealing with uneven play, injuries, and the trades of Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis. Johnson made his first All-Star Game appearance last month.

Lumber Company Keeps Coasters Rolling

A Northwest Georgia lumber company quietly helps build and maintain wooden roller coasters around the world.

S.I. Storey Lumber Co. in Armuchee supplies pressure-treated southern yellow pine used in coaster structures. The wood is favored worldwide for coasters because of its density, strength, and pressure-treatment capabilities.

The family-owned business has provided lumber for coasters at many large and small parks, including all of the lumber for the Viper at Six Flags Great America and most of the lumber for Weerwolf in Belgium, along with repair materials for aging wooden coasters.

Founded in 1920 by Stella and Sike Storey and continued by their children and grandchildren, the company began supplying lumber for coasters starting more than 20 years ago, with Six Flags Over Georgia another of its clients.
