Eight of nine defendants in a sexual abuse lawsuit against NC State officials and former Sports Medicine Director Robert Murphy have filed motions in Wake County Superior Court to dismiss the case.

The suit accuses Murphy of sexually assaulting, harassing, and exploiting 31 former male athletes under the guise of medical treatment between 2012 and 2022. The plaintiffs allege improper genital touching during massages and intrusive urine sample collection during drug testing.

They also claim university administrators, including former Chancellor Randy Woodson, former Athletic Director Debbie Yow, and current Athletic Director Eugene "Boo" Corrigan, knew or should have known of the misconduct but failed to intervene, amounting to negligence and an alleged cover-up.

The administrators argue the claims are time-barred, fall under workers' compensation jurisdiction, or warrant public official immunity. Murphy, the ninth defendant, has until March 31 to respond. A hearing on the dismissal motions is set for April 27.

North Carolina State Auditor Dave Boliek said his office will soon release a series of major audits as part of a push for greater transparency and fiscal responsibility across state and local entities.

The reviews include a complete performance audit of the North Carolina Education Lottery, following an earlier financial statement audit, and an examination of how voter-approved bonds have been spent over about six years.

A Division of Accountability, Value, and Efficiency report will also address UNC System issues, such as faculty vacancies and tenured professors' classroom hours.

These announcements come as the auditor's office continues broader oversight efforts, including a report released Monday highlighting severe financial distress in Rocky Mount due to unchecked overspending under its former city manager.

Advanced sonar technology has delivered new 3D images of the USS Monitor, the pioneering Civil War ironclad that sank off Cape Hatteras during a storm in 1862, the same year as its historic battle with the CSS Virginia.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, working with Northrop Grumman, used an autonomous underwater vehicle with micro synthetic aperture sonar in a 2025 survey to capture high-resolution scans of the wreck, which lies about 240 feet deep.

The detailed imagery shows the ship—discovered by researchers in August 1973 and now an artificial reef bustling with marine life—in remarkably good condition. It also provides clear views of the hull remains and surrounding debris field on the seafloor.

Experts say the scans will help researchers better study and preserve the historic wreck, part of the world's largest maritime metals conservation project.
