I am not a Grok (X’s built-in and highly controversial AI) user. But this exchange between someone who responded to one of my posts and Grok tickled me, and I thought you’d like it too. We deserve all the laughs we can get right now. About a month ago, on a Saturday night, I shared some chicken pictures with you here and posted a link to the newsletter on X. A user called “Make It Memeingful” responded: “I love her pinned Tweet.”
My long-time pinned tweet has nothing to do with chickens. It reads, “The first time President Obama met with his US Attorneys, he told us, 'I appointed you, but you don’t serve me. You serve the American people. And I expect you to act with independence & integrity.” None of us ever forgot that.” It’s a memory that has become increasingly stark in the years since. So, here’s the fun part. Apparently, if you “@” grok, you get a response, or at least, “Make It Memeingful” did. The two accounts went on at length. Didn’t understand the chicken part? Come on, Make It Memeingful. I thought that was why everyone was here at Civil Discourse? But the funny part is, Grok comes off as sort of normal here, especially given who its daddy is. But as Grok’s insistence on getting answers about Make It’s priorities grew, Make It lost interest and drifted off. Or perhaps it was concern when Grok proudly posted that it now “remembers” its conversations with you. Concerns about AI aside, I was amused that Grok could switch back and forth between politics and chickens. The key takeaway, though? It’s about Civil Discourse: Come for the chickens, and stay for democracy. Or come for the democracy, and stay for the chickens. Either way, this is how we build a community that will get us through 2026 and beyond, by connecting and by committing to preserving our republic. Here’s the other thing—perhaps it’s possible to use Grok to spread our message on X? If you decide to experiment with that, let us know how it goes!
