Article Icon 1Marathon Mishap Outcome Detailed

The Atlanta Track Club is offering to pay prize money to the three lead runners who were led off course by the race's guide vehicle during the women's USATF Half Marathon Championships that took place on Sunday, March 1.

With about 1.5 miles to the finish line, the guide vehicle took a wrong turn. The runners followed it, unknowingly straying from the correct path.

A review of the incident revealed that the error stemmed from an emergency response to a police officer being struck by a vehicle near the course.

As a result, the affected runners lost their leading positions, finishing ninth, 12th, and 13th. Their appeal to have the official results adjusted was denied by USA Track & Field.
