Anderson County in rural East Texas will soon be home to a $16 billion natural gas-fired power facility, the Texas Power Generation Hub, built and operated by NextEra Energy Resources.

The plant will generate up to 5.2 gigawatts of electricity—enough to power more than one million Texas homes. The project is part of a $550 billion U.S.-Japan investment agreement signed last October between President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

State Rep. Cody Harris (R-Palestine), who was at the White House for the announcement, said the hub will bring 3,000 high-paying jobs and help cut local property taxes.

The news comes amid growing bipartisan concern over data center expansion across rural Texas, with lawmakers on both sides warning of strain on local water and power resources.

Article Icon 1 House Speaker Eyes Annexing Part of New Mexico

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows has directed the Select Committee on Governmental Oversight to study the feasibility of adding one or more New Mexico counties along the state line to Texas.

The focus is on Lea County, an oil-rich slice of the Permian Basin that Burrows says deserves "a real voice in its own future, not one dictated by Santa Fe."

The idea got a cold reception in New Mexico, where Democrats control the legislature and the governor's office. New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martínez fired back, telling Burrows to "get offline, touch some grass, and get his own House in order."

The annexation push is one of Burrows' stated priorities heading into the 2027 legislative session. A similar proposal introduced in New Mexico's recent session never made it out of committee.

A Celina homeowner got a rude awakening after someone booked his mansion on Airbnb for a "party of seven," and up to 800 teens and young adults showed up for a party that ended with gunshots and police arrests.

Owner Kishore Karlapudi said partygoers hauled furniture into the garage, broke the granite countertops, and stripped wall fixtures throughout the home.

Things turned dangerous when shots were fired and police received reports of armed men at the front gate threatening to kill someone. Officers arrived to find the party far larger than expected, and two people were taken into custody.

Once inside, officers found damage and blood-stained bed sheets and towels, according to police. "It's shock and chaos," said one officer.
