Large Data Center Planned

The U.S. Department of Energy announced a public-private partnership to build a large data center with its own power supply at the decommissioned Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon.

Plans for the site call for one of the world’s largest data centers powered by up to 10 gigawatts of electricity generation, mostly fueled by natural gas.

The project’s first phase includes an 800-megawatt data center, expected to create 4,000 construction jobs and 300 to 400 permanent jobs.

SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japan-based SoftBank Group, will partner with AEP Ohio to build the power infrastructure, including $4.2 billion in grid improvements.

Pilot Honors Fallen Guardsmen

A central Ohio pilot paid tribute to the three fallen Ohio Air National Guardsmen by following a flight path in the shape of three crosses and a saluting serviceman. You can see a radar image here.

The tribute honored 121st Air Refueling Wing members Capt. Seth Koval, Capt. Curtis Angst, and Tech. Sgt. Tyler Simmons, who died when their aircraft crashed in Iraq while supporting Operation Epic Fury.

Fundraisers to support their families are underway, including one by Rickenbacker Military Families. Flags across the state will remain at half-staff until each air guardsman's funeral.

Ohio No. 5 in Highway Rankings

Ohio jumped from No. 10 to No. 5 nationally in Reason Foundation's annual highway rankings. You can view the complete rankings here.

The Buckeye State placed in the top 10 in four categories: maintenance disbursements, capital and bridge disbursements, rural arterial pavement, and rural fatality rate.

The state's lowest placement came in the category of urban other principal arterials, where it placed No. 35 nationally.

Ohio's overall ranking surpassed neighbors Kentucky (No. 15), Indiana (No. 18), Michigan (No. 23), West Virginia (No. 30), and Pennsylvania (No. 36).
