Knitting red hats as resistance. Blaming China for Trump’s election loss in 2020 as an excuse for imposing stringent voter suppression policies. Those two stories, both of which we’ve discussed this week, might seem unconnected at first glance. But in reality, we’re now approaching a moment where our ability to protest and resist is more important than it has ever been. The lesson of the footsoldiers in the Civil Rights movement, the people who fought successfully for the right to vote, is that awareness, education, protest, and persistence are the keys. We should follow in their tradition. My dear friend Ruth Ben-Ghiat, author of the seminal book Strongmen, looks at these issues through a historian’s lens, while I examine them from a legal one. Our work tends to intersect. Join us Saturday morning, as we share our thoughts with you over coffee. If you’ve got questions for us, drop them in the chat.
