Article Icon 1Warmer Spring Temperatures in Sight

A stretch of warmer-than-average weather is settling into Middle Tennessee, with highs climbing into the 60s this week and surging into the 70s by Saturday.

Forecasters say a steady southerly flow is pulling milder Gulf air north, setting the stage for Nashville’s potential first 80-degree day of the year by March 7 or 8.

If so, it would beat Nashville’s average first 80-degree date of March 28, though not the earliest on record, which was Feb. 13, 1962.

Warmer springs trigger earlier blooms, longer allergy seasons, and higher wildfire risk as vegetation dries sooner, forecasters say.

Article Icon 1Tennessee Joins Federal Foster Push

The program, led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, aims to increase licensed foster homes, support kinship caregivers, and strengthen prevention services to reduce the number of children entering care.

State officials say the Department of Children’s Services will also work to improve data reporting and meet federal child welfare review standards.

Lee said the goal is simple: ensure a safe home is ready whenever a child must enter state care.

Article Icon 1Varallo’s Closes After 119 Years

Varallo’s, Tennessee’s oldest continuously operating restaurant, closed on Wednesday, ending a 119-year run in downtown Nashville.

Founded in 1907 by Italian immigrant Frank Varallo Sr., the chili parlor became known for its original 1907 chili recipe and its signature “three-way”—spaghetti, tamales, and chili.

The restaurant stayed in the Varallo family for more than a century before being sold in 2019 to local businessman Bob Peabody.

Its closure marks the end of a long chapter in Nashville dining history, one that started with a chili cart and grew into a local institution.
