Article Icon 1Democrat Flips Tarrant County Senate Seat

Democrat Taylor Rehmet defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss in a low-turnout special election in Tarrant County on Saturday to fill the remainder of the Texas Senate term for Kelly Hancock, who vacated the seat last year to become acting comptroller.

Rehmet, a 33-year-old Air Force veteran and union leader, received 57% of the vote in a district that President Trump won by 17 points in 2024. About 15% of registered voters participated in the runoff election.

Wambsganss, a 58-year-old Patriot Mobile executive, raised more than $2.5 million for the campaign, while Rehmet raised just over $380,000. "Too many Republicans stayed home," said Wambsganss, saying she "fully expects" to win the seat in a November rematch.

"Tonight's results prove that no Republican seat is safe," said Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin. "From now until November, Democrats are keeping our foot on the gas and organizing and competing everywhere, including in Texas and the rest of the Sun Belt."

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, returned to Minneapolis on Sunday after U.S. District Judge Fred Biery ordered their release from a federal detention center in Dilley. In a Saturday order, Biery accused the Trump administration of being "bereft of human decency."

Ramos was detained with his father when the boy's family refused to open the door to federal agents after his father's arrest. Department of Homeland Security officials accused Ramos' father of abandoning the boy while attempting to flee.

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) accompanied the duo upon their release and joined them and ABC reporter John Quinones on their flight to Minneapolis, where they were greeted by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minneapolis). In a note, Castro told Ramos, "You have moved the world."

According to Columbia Heights Public Schools in Minneapolis, four more of its students are being held at the Dilley detention center. On Saturday, thousands of people attended a "Stop ICE" rally in Austin.

Punxsutawney Phil will predict how much longer winter will stick around when he wakes up and looks for his shadow this morning, but Texas will mark Groundhog Day with a host of other prognosticators, including Bee Cave Bob, Big Al, and Beans.

Since 2010, the town of Bee Cave has gotten its forecast from a nine-banded armadillo named Bee Cave Bob. An Armadillo Day celebration with barbecue, chili, and tamales is organized by the Benevolent Knights of the Raccoon at West Pole Ranch.

In Beaumont, a 94-year-old alligator from Gator Country Adventure Park will be served a meal. If he eats it, winter will end soon. Alligators like Big Al conserve energy when temperatures drop by entering a state called brumation, and they won't eat unless warmer weather is on the way.

Folks in Lubbock will gather at Mackenzie Park to get the forecast from Prairie Dog Pete, and in Buda—the self-proclaimed Wiener Dog Capital of Texas—a Dachshund named Beans will choose between a stuffed snowman and a sunshine plush toy.

Unknown Number Calling? It's Not Random

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don't pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it's not just calls. It's phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That's why we recommend Incogni: They delete your info from the web, monitor and follow up automatically, and continue to erase data as new risks appear.

Tackle your credit card debt by paying 0% interest until nearly 2028. High-interest credit cards can make it ridiculously hard to get ahead. But there's a solution: transfer your balance to a credit card that offers a 0% intro APR until 2027 on balance transfers and no annual fee, which means more of your money actually goes toward paying down your balance. It could be worth considering if you want to break that high-interest cycle.
