Hey there,
Welcome to Day 2 of the 5-Day Values Mini-Course.
Yesterday we got into Aristotle's concepts of hedonia and eudaimonia—and the general idea that long-term well-being stems more from values-driven actions than pleasure-driven actions.
But the question that always comes next is:
"Okay, cool—but how do I actually find my core values?"
Because you can't prioritize values-driven actions without knowing what your values are, right?
So that's what we're getting into today.
TODAY'S MINI-LESSON: Want to Find Your Core Values? Start with Joy.
Most people treat "finding their values" like solving a riddle.
They sit there trying to intellectualize their way to insight—like if they just think harder, something profound will happen.
But here's the truth:
You don't think your way into your values.
You notice your way into them.
And the easiest way to notice?
Joy.
TODAY'S ACTION PROMPT
List 20 things that bring you joy.
Yup, that's it. Big or small. Weird or basic. Doesn't matter. Some examples…
- A long walk with no podcast (unless it's Solved, obviously).
- Working late on a project you actually care about.
- Coffee alone in the morning.
- Laughing until your stomach hurts.
- Building something. Writing something. Fixing something.
There are no wrong answers, just honest ones.
After you're done, look at your list and ask: What values do these things point to?
Freedom? Beauty? Growth? Connection? Mastery? Peace?
There's no wrong answer. Your joy list is just a mirror. The reflection? That's your value system starting to show its wonderful face.
