Article Icon 1Meta-Corning Deal Boosts NC's AI Industry

A major multiyear deal announced Tuesday between Meta Platforms and Corning Incorporated, valued at up to $6 billion, positions North Carolina at the forefront of America's artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure boom.

As part of the deal, Corning will supply advanced optical fiber, cable, and connectivity solutions for Meta's expanding AI data centers. To meet demand, Corning will significantly expand its Hickory facility—already a major optical cable hub and a key supplier to Meta—with company officials saying it could become the world's largest fiber-optic plant.

Corning employs more than 5,000 people across North Carolina, including in Hickory, Newton, Wilmington, Winston-Salem, and Concord. It expects a 15-20% workforce increase involving the addition of hundreds of jobs in engineering, science, and manufacturing.

The company's shares jumped 15.6% Tuesday to a new 52-week high after the announcement.

Article Icon 1NC Ranks 13th in Educational Freedom

North Carolina ranks 13th nationally in the 2026 American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) Index of State Education Freedom, earning a B+ grade for its parental empowerment policies.

ALEC evaluates states based on five key areas: student-centered funding, charter schools, homeschooling, virtual learning, and open enrollment. Florida topped the list with an A+, followed by Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, and West Virginia.

The Tar Heel State's strong performance stems from its Opportunity Scholarship Program—now universally available to all students regardless of income—and a robust charter school network.

North Carolina received a C in homeschooling and virtual schools, and an F in open enrollment, which contributed to its drop from 12th place as other states advanced more quickly.

Article Icon 1Weekend Snow Chances Increase

Confidence is growing in measurable snow across much of North Carolina this weekend as a developing coastal low-pressure system interacts with abundant cold air already in place.

Increasing model agreement suggests an all-snow event across the Triangle and Piedmont regions, likely starting Friday evening and continuing through Saturday into early Sunday. A similar chance of snow is predicted for Western North Carolina.

The Outer Banks area has a 60-80% chance of moderate impacts from the storm, with snow, 40-50 mph winds, and coastal flooding possible.

Uncertainties persist around the system's track. Meteorologists expect to sharpen their forecasts later today, but most agree that at least one inch of snow will fall across much of North Carolina, northern South Carolina, and southern Virginia.
