After wrestling with a difficult problem through intense effort, the answer he was seeking surfaced during an inactive moment in the bath. That pattern is no accident: Disciplined, structured work followed by unstructured, undirected thought is where breakthroughs are born. The brain is not silent at rest. It is actively connecting thoughts and experiences, linking distant ideas, and surfacing new connections. The lesson: Work hard, then create space for the work to breathe.
