We think we want to be rich. Or famous. Or powerful. We think we want to succeed so we can buy more stuff and hear the approval of strangers cheering our name. But in Meditations, Marcus Aurelius notes how trivial these things are. People who need them to feel alive are bound to become a mess, disfiguring themselves in their desperation to get them. Chasing after applause from the crowd? Forget it, Marcus says. It's no more than the clacking of tongues and the smacking of hands.
So if we throw out all these motivations for our ambitions, what's left to prize in ourselves?
"I think it's this: to do (and not do) what we were designed for," Marcus writes. "That's the goal of all trades, all arts, and what each of them aims at: that the thing they create should do what it was designed to do."
You were put here for a reason. There is a purpose to your existence.
Learning how to live out that purpose is the greatest ambition we can hope to achieve. "Hold on to that," Marcus says, "and you won't be tempted to aim at anything else."
