Florida airports are experiencing delays as U.S. airlines have canceled over 4,400 flights since Friday following a mandate from the FAA. Airlines canceled nearly 1,600 flights yesterday and are expected to cancel nearly 1,000 more today.

Many airports are also facing significant delays for flights that haven't been canceled, with airports in Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale all facing departure delays of more than an hour as the government shutdown continues.

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) and Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) have been affected, despite not being among the 40 busiest airports that saw traffic reduced by the FAA. The ripple effect caused 14 flight cancellations at PBI from Friday through Sunday, and at least six cancellations at JAX.

FedEx and UPS have hubs at affected airports. Both shippers also grounded their fleets of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 planes on Friday after a deadly crash in Kentucky, which could create additional strain on the supply chain and economy.

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced from Fernandina Beach that the state is pushing to control management of the recreational red snapper season in the Atlantic and wants to extend the season to 39 days for anglers and for-hire operators.

DeSantis said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has submitted an exempted fishing permit (EFP) to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to allow state management of the season in the Atlantic beginning in 2026.

The proposed season would go from two days per year to two seasons per year. The first would be a 39-day season beginning May 22 and running through June. The second season would include three-day weekends starting in October.

The economic impact on Northeastern Florida is expected to be substantial, as it has been with the Gulf Red Snapper season, which the state took control of seven years ago.

Article Icon 1Plane Crash in Broward County

A small plane bound for Montego Bay, Jamaica, on a Hurricane Melissa relief mission crashed in a Coral Springs neighborhood on Monday at around 10:15 a.m., within minutes of takeoff, killing two people on board.

Aerial footage showed that the Beechcraft King Air B100 plane appeared to have clipped some trees and damaged part of a home's backyard fence before crashing nose-first into a small lake within the gated Windsor Bay neighborhood.

Authorities have not yet identified the victims. No injuries were reported on the ground. The rescue effort has become a recovery effort.

The plane, manufactured in 1976, was registered to International Air Services, Inc. in Carson City, Nevada, according to the FAA. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
