Article Icon 1Abbott Launches Campaign for Fourth Term

Gov. Greg Abbott launched his campaign for a record fourth term Sunday night in Houston, touting conservative victories during his tenure while warning supporters about Democratic efforts to turn Texas blue.

During his speech, Abbott unveiled a property tax overhaul that he promised would "drive a stake through the heart of local property tax hikes for good." Among other measures, the plan would lower appraisal caps and let Texans vote on abolishing school property taxes.

"What we have in Texas is precious. But it can all be destroyed in one bad election," said Abbott. "We will defend our culture, and we will safeguard our Texas values, from the radicals who are trying to shove our state to the left."

Abbott has nearly $90 million in campaign funds, and he doesn't currently face any serious primary challengers. Yesterday, 2006 gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell joined State Rep. Gina Hinojosa, businessman Andrew White, and rancher Bobby Cole in vying for the Democratic nomination.

Article Icon 1TxDOT Calls for Expanded Public Transit

TxDOT's first-ever Statewide Multimodal Transit Plan calls for expanding public transit across Texas to accommodate the state's growing population, which is projected to increase by more than 9 million residents by 2050.

The agency has proposed $146 billion for upgrading and expanding Texas highways over the next decade. State lawmakers have traditionally opposed public transit projects, such as Austin's Project Connect and the proposed Texas Central high-speed rail line.

The draft report predicts that Texans in rural areas will increasingly depend on public transit to access medical care and other services. It also highlights the difficulty of traveling within the Texas Triangle—the area between DFW, Houston, and San Antonio—where more than two-thirds of Texans live.

Achieving statewide connectivity for cities with at least 10,000 residents could cost $30 billion in initial expenditures and $5 billion a year to operate. TxDOT is holding meetings on the plan tomorrow in San Antonio and Thursday in Austin. Feedback can also be submitted online until November 20.

Hundreds of Amarillo residents gathered at a downtown art gallery on Sunday to view the 2025 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree as it made its way to Washington, D.C. This year's stop was only the third time it's come through Amarillo. The last was in 2013.

The 53-foot red fir, the first to be harvested from Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, was visible through windows in the specially decorated trailer, which attendees could sign.

The tree will make additional stops in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland before being installed at the U.S. Capitol on November 21. Follow its progress here.

Food trucks, vendors, and Santa Claus were also on hand for the celebration. In commemoration of Texas Arbor Day, Amarillo Parks and Recreation distributed 500 native trees in five-gallon buckets, and the Texas A&M Forest Service handed out seedlings.
