Ohio State, Alter Hall of Famer Dies at 41

Legendary Ohio State and NFL offensive lineman Nick Mangold died at 41 of complications from a genetic kidney disease. Earlier this month, he posted on social media, disclosing his diagnosis and seeking a kidney transplant.

A Centerville native, Mangold played at Archbishop Alter High School before going to Ohio State, where he was a first-team All-American in 2005 and became the first OSU center selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

Mangold made seven Pro Bowls in 11 seasons for the New York Jets and last week advanced to the next round of voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2026.

He was inducted into the Alter High School Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.

Ohio High School Football Rankings Finalized

After the regular season ended Friday, the Ohio High School Athletic Association released its final football rankings and playoff pairings ahead of this week's first-round games.

The postseason field was reduced from 16 to 12 teams per region this season, with the top four teams in each region earning first-round byes.

St. Edward, Middletown, Olentangy Orange, and Elder earned the top seeds in their respective Division I regions. The final rankings for Divisions I-VII are available here.

Ironton, last season's Division V state champion, was banned from postseason play on Friday after the OHSAA found "numerous violations of the OHSAA's recruiting bylaws over the last seven years."

Fall Trip Guides Released

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and TourismOhio released two new guides to help residents plan a "perfect fall trip."

Ohioans who want to see colorful fall foliage at public outdoor spaces can check the guide 16 Ohio State Parks to Leaf Peep this Fall, which features places such as Alum Creek State Park in Delaware and Burr Oak State Park in Glouster.

The blog post Charming Ohio Towns to Check Out this Fall for a Perfect Weekend Getaway suggests visiting the Uptown Oxford Historic District or the Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum in Dover.
