Critical Races Nearing Election Day

Tuesday’s general election features mayoral races in several Ohio cities, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, and Toledo.

In Cincinnati, incumbent Democrat Aftab Pureval faces Republican Cory Bowman, a pastor and the half-brother of Vice President JD Vance.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb is running against Republican Laverne Gore and Democratic write-in candidate Ricky Pittman. Incumbents in Toledo and Dayton are also up for reelection.

City Council seats are also on the ballot in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Registered Ohio voters can find a sample ballot on the secretary of state’s website.

GM Announces Lordstown Layoffs

General Motors plans to lay off more than 1,700 workers in January, including 550 at its Ultium Cells battery cell plant in Lordstown, citing a slowdown in the electric vehicle market.

Another 850 workers at the Ohio facility will be temporarily laid off, with production expected to be paused until at least May 2026.

Federal incentives for electric vehicle purchases were discontinued in March, and EV sales have fallen nationwide by 74% from their 2025 peak, according to one source.

GM's Ohio cuts are in addition to 1,200 layoffs at its Detroit electric vehicle plant.

Nativity Scene Rejected

A Pataskala woman's plan to host a live nativity at a Christmas market in December was rejected by city leaders, prompting responses from her attorney and Republican candidate for governor Vivek Ramaswamy.

City officials approved Susan Conley's Christmas market on the condition that the live nativity not be on city property, a decision her attorney called unconstitutional.

Ramaswamy wrote on X that: "Denying permits for religious displays on public property because of their content is a First Amendment violation & has a chilling effect on all religious faiths."

The First Liberty Institute plans to sue if the city doesn't respond by today, while Pataskala's mayor said the law director expects to provide an answer by then.
