Monday: The Odysseus Trap: A Clear Path to Lesser Goals In Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men faced a long, arduous journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Early in the voyage, a series of fierce storms blow them off course and land them on a mysterious, sunlit island. The inhabitants were friendly and welcoming. They offered Odysseus and his men food, specifically the fruit of the lotus plant. But this was no ordinary fruit. The moment the men tasted it, something strange happened: They lost all desire to continue their difficult journey home. It wasn't a storm or a battle that nearly doomed them. It was comfort. The story is a powerful reminder that the greatest threat to our goals isn't resistance—it's ease. The quiet pull toward the lesser path. In this piece, I unpack how to recognize your own "lotus" and stay true to your mission when comfort tries to pull you off course. His fear of fate became the very thing that brought him to it. It's a powerful reminder of the futility of control. We crave certainty, but sometimes, to live a happy, fulfilled life, we have to let it go. That's where the ancient Stoic idea of Amor Fati comes in—a love of one's fate. It isn't passive acceptance. It's an embrace of what's beyond your control, and action toward what's within it. In Wednesday's article, I explore how Amor Fati offers peace in a world obsessed with control—and how you can apply it to your own life. Two swindlers promised him a suit so magnificent that it would be invisible to anyone unfit for their position or hopelessly foolish. They dress him in the invisible garments, and the emperor steps out into the city streets for a grand parade—completely naked. The townspeople, afraid to appear unfit or foolish, cheer for the outfit that isn't there. Only a small child told the truth: "But he's completely naked!" It's a children's story, but it beautifully captures one of the most dangerous dynamics in human nature: The Abilene Paradox. The Abilene Paradox occurs when a group collectively decides on a course of action that none of its members actually support, because each person mistakenly believes others do. The antidote is courage and clarity—the willingness to be the child in the crowd who exposes the truth and asks the uncomfortable question: Do I actually want this, or am I just afraid to say I don't?
